2 Timothy is a Pauline epistle, one of the Pastoral Epistles. In this second letter to Timothy, Paul shares his heart and legacy as he realizes he may not survive much longer. It was written about 65 A.D. from a Roman prison. It is his last letter written in the NT. His major theme is the gospel, which permeates throughout the letter. An outline of the letter can show how the gospel is worthy in many ways.
In chapter 1, the gospel is worthy of confidence, proclamation, and protection. In the thanksgiving section, Paul shares the gospel is worth suffering for (1:8) and he encourages his protégé Timothy to guard it (1:14). Timothy has received a gift of the Holy Spirit, and he is to fan it into flames (1:6). Paul shares the gospel in 1:8-10. For this reason, Paul is suffering. Yet he is not ashamed (1:12). God can guard it and Timothy is to guard it also with the help of the Holy Spirit (1:12-14).
In chapter 2, the gospel is worthy of hardships endured and faithfulness. Timothy is to endure hardship like a good soldier of Christ Jesus (2:3). Paul compares ministry to being an athlete and a hardworking farmer. The gospel is a person, Jesus Christ (2:8). Paul is willing to endure everything for the sake of the elect (2:10). Paul discusses the benefits of persevering and warns against apostasy in his trustworthy saying in 2:11-13. Timothy is to correctly handle the word of truth (2:15). Paul gives Timothy advice on how to approach the false teachers in the rest of chapter 2.
In chapter 3, the gospel is worthy of acknowledgement and standing against opposition. Paul lists eighteen vices in the list in 3:2-5. A comparison can be made of the false teacher’s way of life and Paul’s from this chapter. In the vice list, selfishness and ungodliness abound. In Paul’s way of life, despite selflessness, suffering and persecution abound. The believer has the word of God, which is useful for training in righteousness.
In chapter 4, the gospel is worthy of endurance and participation. Paul charges Timothy to preach the Word in season and out of season. He is to correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and careful instruction (4:2). Though men may not put up with sound doctrine, Timothy is to keep his head in all situations, do the work of an evangelist, and discharge the duties of his ministry (4:5). Paul’s time for departure has come and he has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith (4:7). In his final remarks, Paul desires to see Timothy one more time if God permits. He warns Timothy to beware of those who oppose the gospel. God delivers his servants from every evil attack (4:18).
Structure
Chapter 1
Fan into flame the gift of God; the Spirit He gave is not of fear but of power, love and self-discipline — guard the good deposit.
Chapter 2
A soldier, an athlete, a farmer, a worker who rightly handles the word of truth, and a servant who corrects opponents gently.
Chapter 3
A catalogue of what people will be like in the last days, set against the Scriptures Timothy has known since childhood — God-breathed, and enough.
Chapter 4
Preach the word in season and out; I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith — and a final list of names, requests and farewells.
Key Themes
01
Truth handed on, to be guarded and entrusted to faithful people.
02
Join with me in suffering for the gospel; everyone who lives godly will be persecuted.
03
God-breathed and useful, able to equip for every good work.
04
The language of the whole letter is finishing.
05
Friends have left, and the Lord stood by him.
The Challenge We Face
Paul tells Timothy to remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David — that is the gospel he is chained for, and he adds that the word of God is not chained.
The letter ends looking forward to the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to all who have longed for His appearing.
Apply Scripture

Fan into flame what God has given you; it can grow cold.
Expect opposition rather than being surprised by it.
Scripture is sufficient to equip you for every good work.
Handle the word of truth carefully; it can be handled badly.
Aim to finish, not only to start.
