1 Timothy Summary

by Dr. David Silver2 min read

1 Timothy is a Pauline epistle which is one of the Pastoral Epistles (including 2 Timothy and Titus). He wrote them towards the end of his life (about 64 A.D.) to help his protégé’s to lead churches. Timothy may have become a Christian on Paul’s first missionary journey. Paul wrote to Timothy to help him to combat false teaching in Ephesus and to strengthen the church by appointing elders and deacons. It can be outlined as follows: chapter 1- prioritize the gospel and exhort false teachers; chapter 2- advancing the mission of the church; chapter 3-conduct in God’s household; chapter 4-devotion and training in godliness; chapter 5-show honor; chapter 6-growing in godliness.

In chapter 1, Paul urges Timothy to command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer (1:3). The false teachers focused on myths and genealogies, and they misused the law (1:4-11). In the thanksgiving section (1:12-20), Paul highlights the importance of the gospel.

In chapter 2, Paul called for prayer for authorities to free the church from restraint. He wanted women to be good role models to avoid accusation toward the church.

The Challenge We Face

How 1 Timothy Points to Christ

Paul gives one of the clearest statements of the gospel in his letters: there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all.

And he offers his own conversion as the pattern: Christ Jesus displayed His unlimited patience on the worst of sinners, as an example for those who would believe.
