1 Corinthians Summary

by Dr. David Silver4 min read

1 Corinthians is a Pauline epistle written about 55 A.D. by Paul while he was on his third missionary journey in Ephesus. He helped establish the Corinthian church on his second missionary journey and spent eighteen months there. Corinth was the capital of the province of Achaia, situated on an isthmus near Greece, providing access by land and sea to the surrounding regions. It became a large and wealthy city during Roman times, and had a reputation for wickedness, including sexual immorality. It appears Paul wrote four letters in total to the church at Corinth, but we only have two letters that are available. In this first letter to them, he responds to reports from within the church in the first six chapters and responds to a letter from them in the remainder of the book.

After his introduction, including a greeting, he has a thanksgiving section, which encompasses Paul’s themes of the letter. The Corinthians do not lack any spiritual gift (1:7). God will keep them strong to the end (1:8). Paul shares his concerns about divisions he has heard about because he wants to build unity in the church as they mature together (1:10-12). God chose the lowly things so no one can boast before him (1:29).

God has revealed his secret wisdom by his Spirit (2:7,10). We have the mind of Christ (2:16). Paul urges the Corinthians not to split into factions following different leaders, but rather to be united. The church is the temple of God and God’s Spirit lives in us (3:16). Paul claims to be their father through the gospel and as an apostle he has been mistreated by the world (3:9-13,15). In chapter 5, Paul deals with an immoral brother and tells the church to excommunicate him (5:13). In chapter 6, he commands the church to avoid lawsuits against each other.

    Divisions

Factions following rival leaders answered with the message of the cross — foolishness to the world and the wisdom and power of God.

  2. Chapters 5–7

    Purity and Marriage

An immoral member disciplined, lawsuits between believers rebuked, the body as a temple, and careful counsel on marriage and singleness.

  3. Chapters 8–11

    Freedom and Its Limits

Food offered to idols, Paul laying down his rights, becoming all things to all people, and order at the Lord’s Supper.

  4. Chapters 12–14

    Gifts and Love

One body with many parts, the great chapter on love at the centre, and prophecy preferred to tongues so the church is built up.

  5. Chapters 15–16

    Resurrection

The gospel Paul received and passed on, the resurrection as the ground of everything, and the collection for Jerusalem.

Key Themes

Major Themes

  1. 01

    The Cross

The answer to every problem in the letter is the message of Christ crucified.

  2. 02

    Unity

Is Christ divided? A church pulling into factions around personalities.

  3. 03

    Holiness

You are not your own; you were bought with a price.

  4. 04

    Love

Gifts without love are noise; love is what makes the church work.

  5. 05

    Resurrection

If Christ has not been raised, our preaching and faith are useless.

The Challenge We Face

How 1 Corinthians Points to Christ

Paul says he resolved to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and the cross is what he applies to every quarrel in the church.

Chapter 15 preserves the earliest summary of the gospel we have: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared — and that in Him the dead will be raised.

Apply Scripture

Practical Takeaways

  1. 01

Gathering around personalities divides what the cross unites.

  2. 02

Freedom is for the sake of others, and can be laid down.

  3. 03

Every gift is given for the common good, not for status.

  4. 04

Without love, the most impressive gift is worth nothing.

  5. 05

The resurrection is not a footnote to the faith; it is the faith.
